Ask og Eng studio was founded in 2015, and is run by Kine Ask Stenersen and Kristoffer Eng. (And we know, we are really lucky with those names, so finding a name for the studio was not that hard for us).
Our main motivation for starting the studio is our love for using sustainable materials when decorating our own home, and the fact that we love to design and make our own furniture. And after a while doing that we started dreaming about how it would be to do that full time.
The idea of Ask og Eng came to life during a cafe lunch, something which we rarely had time for at that time. Kine was on maternity leave from her job as a environmental geographer, and we felt quite overwhelmed and busy as first time parents, with the renovation of our new house, and with Kristoffer in his full time job as an architect. However, for the second time around renovating a house, we decided to build the kitchen our selves out of the sustainable material bamboo. We were so pleased with the result of our last kitchen build in our previous apartment, that even if we had our hands full, living in one bedroom, we decided that it would be worth the wait and work of making our own kitchen this time around also.
So that is how the idea came about, we thought that if we loved it so much, and thought it was worth all that extra work, maybe someone else would love a sustainable kitchen too? So the next six months were spent brainstorming and writing down our ideas for this next huge journey we were venturing on. But even so, we more or less just dived in to it, without really having all plans or products in place, or knowing exactly what to do. We started out by making, producing and learning as we went a long, and that is still how we do it.
Six months after that, and after making furnitures in our new kitchen and on our new living room floors, we moved in to our new workshop/studio/showroom in Drammen. Where we now design and build handmade kitchen and other furniture out of the material bamboo.
We still have quite a way to go, and are still learning by doing, and Kristoffer is still working as an architect full time, to make the ends meet. So it is hard at times, and not all as perfect as it might seem sometimes on Instagram, but we love it, and would love to be able to make this dream of ours come true.
